1. OPTIMIZING THE WRONG KEYWORD PHRASE. If you have ever driven traffic to your website, only to watch in bewilderment at your low conversion rates, then you are definitely making this deadly mistake.
Most people go about the process of optimizing a keyword or keyword phrase all backwards. Why would you spend all that time and energy optimizing keywords before you have tested their conversion? That just doesn't make sense.
The solution is actually very simple: always test your conversion rates with individual keywords using PPC (pay-per-click) first. That way you will know which specific keywords are converting and then you can optimize individual web pages using only highly converting keywords.
2. USING THE WRONG KEYWORD RESEARCH TOOLS. There seems to be a shroud of secrecy and contradiction when it comes to knowing what keyword tool to use to secure highly converting keywords. Ask 10 online marketers how they go about securing their keywords and you'll get 10 different answers.
Here's the bottom line; it really doesn't matter what tool you use, what really matters is understanding what to do with the keywords once you harvest them. A better keyword strategy would be to segment your keywords into separate buckets by "themes" and then create individual ad campaigns around those themes using PPC.
It won't take more than 100 clicks before you have a clear understanding of which keywords are converting best. You can then optimize web pages using those keywords.
3. NOT OPTIMIZING LANDING PAGES. The third and final mistake most people make is not setting up individual landing pages optimized to keywords. Some would call these pages dynamic because the page gets populated with the keyword the searcher used to find the page.
It doesn't really matter what you call it, what matters is you must create a page for prospects to land on using individual keywords or relevant keyword themes. A PPC campaign can easily return enough data to you within a few days. You can use this data to then go back and optimize only those keywords proven to convert.
